Any more tips to go green?

If everyone changed to low energy fluorescent bulbs it would be the carbon equivalent of taking a million cars off the road.
Don’t rinse your plates before putting them into the dishwasher. This can save 15 gallons of water every time the dishwasher is run, and it’s gross anyway.

You can hang your clothes outside to dry. They will smell better and feel great. Also use the cold setting on the washer.
Use a reusable container for water that you purify at home.
Recycle glass because it doesn’t decompose.
Take things to charity instead of trashing them.
Convert to solar and wind power by buying wind and solar credits from the power company or by installing your own system.

Is solar power effective alone?

It can be, but it much more cost effective and efficient to also have a windmill. A wind turbine is much cheaper than a solar array and is more effective when solar panels are least effective, the winter. You would have to have a large array with plenty of batteries to create enough solar power alone because there is only so much sunlight in a day, and that decreases in the winter when the winds also increase. A wind turbine is most efficient in the roughest weather and can provide ample power in many conditions where solar power would be useless. They are a great complement to each other and allow the owner to have small, affordable and manageable arrays and towers.
